Acorn Computers Ltd founded in Cambridge, UK
5th December 1978 On 5th December 1978 Hermann Hauser and Chris Curry founded Cambridge Processor Unit Ltd, known as CPU Ltd. CPU Ltd. later became Acorn Computers Ltd, and released some of the most popular home computers of the 1980s including the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, and Acorn Archimedes. Acorn computers were particularly popular in the UK, where the BBC Micro was widely used in schools, with the majority of schools having at least one machine. In 1990, Acorn, Apple and VLSI Technology joined forces to create a new company, Arm, which went on to become a very successful semiconductor design company. Related information:
