A creative writing program incorporating a picture editor, a text editor, a spelling checker and a word processor. The program is open-ended in many respects. The picture and text editors allow pupils in the 9 to 12 year-old range to create their own pictures and write and edit their stories about the mystery island [and check their spelling, too!]. These activities could be appropriate for older children too, including in the area of special needs. Once they have benefited from these aspects of the program, the pupils can progress to the use of the straight forward but effective word processor included in the program. They can do so in conjunction with the pictures they have already created about the 'mystery island', but they can also using the word processor (and spelling checker) independently for any work they may be doing at the time. In this way the program could be used up to t the end of lower secondary level as part of an introduction to the use of computers across the curriculum and Information Technology/TVEI. 'Mystery Island' is thus designed to increase pupils' computer literacy as well as developing their creative writing skills.
