Intel introduces the 8080 microprocessor

12th April 1974 Designed by Federico Faggin and Masatoshi Shima, the Intel 8080 was the successor to the earlier 8008 processor. The Intel 8080 powered two of the first personal computers, the Altair 8800 and the IMSAI 8080. Running at 2 megahertz, the processor contained 6,000 transistors housed in a 40-pin DIP package. Work on the 8080 microprocessor began in 1972. Intel formally announced the 8080 with an article by Masatoshi Shima and Federico Faggin about the new processor, which appeared in the 12th April 1974 issue of Electronics magazine.
