Description of Photograph Photograph of the LEO I racks with part of the cooling ducts installed. According to Peter Bird's published caption, this was the first photograph of the LEO I computer shown to the Lyons directors, and was submitted with Report no 7 to the Board by John Simmons on 3 Jul 1950. Published in Bird, Peter LEO - The First Business Computer (Wokingham: Hasler, 1994), plate 21. This image appears in the interactive plan for our Virtual LEO I installation, p8. The caption written on the back of the print is in LEO historian Peter Bird's handwriting, indicating it was originally from his collection but was at some point separated from the rest before being given to the archive.
Research comments: A view of LEO I racks under construction. The valves inside the racks can be clearly seen. The ventilation system is also clearly shown, which draws off surplus heat through the tops of the racks and then out of a nearby window. Only three rows of racks are present at this point, the nearest row (and floor) has yet to be built. Eventually, there are 21 racks in total. The photo is believed to have been taken on 20th June 1950. The windows in this picture face out onto the street (Blythe Road, Hammersmith).
