60878 Ferranti Magnetic Drum type 1009


Description of Photograph

Photograph of the Ferranti magnetic drum type 1009 used on LEO II.  Peter Bird wrote a detailed caption on the reverse of the print:

128 tracks each 1mm wide. The surface is divided into four quadrants each 90 degrees. Each track is divided by the quadrants into four sectors. Each sector is a location on the drum surface where one block of information was stored. One block was equal to one 'tube full' of information as held in main store. Four drums could be attached. Speed of drum was 4,500 rpm. Four drums was equal to 32 times the capacity of main store.
