Cluster Analysis is a complex subject which, ideally, should be studied
carefully before any computer analysis is attempted. At Sheffield, there is
one package specifically for Cluster Analysis: this is "Clustan", and is
available only on the IBM 3083. There are also cluster analysis options
available with some general purpose statistical packages, for example SPSSX,
but these are outside the scope of this Application Note.

This Note describes the essentials of Clustan, but does not attempt to guide
you through the labyrinth of different clustering methods. Much useful
information about such matters, together with numerous references to
appropriate academic literature, can be found in the "Clustan" manual, which is
available for loan from Reception. This manual is strongly recommended.
