Clustan was first developed at the University of St Andrews in the 1960's, for
the collective study of cluster analysis methods and their application to
classification problems in ecology and taxonomy. An early reference can be
found in the proceedings of a 1968 colloquium in numerical taxonomy, published
by Academic Press in 1969 (Ed. A J Cole). Program listings and specifications
for Clustan 1 were published by Kansas University in 1969.

In response to a strong demand for the programs, the first Clustan User Manual
was written in 1969 to accompany an extended version, Clustan 1A. This manual
was mainly available in computer print, although a limited number of copies
were published by SIA Ltd in London.

A second edition of the manual was produced at University College London in
1974. It described Clustan IB, the first version to run as an integrated
package of Clustan procedures linked by a common data file which was paged
from virtual memory.

The third edition of the manual was published by the
Program Library Unit of Edinburgh University in 1978 for Clustan 1C, and later
extended in 1982 by a supplement for Clustan 2.

This fourth edition describes Clustan 3 and is published by the University of
St. Andrews. It represents a major revision of Clustan in respect of its new
command language, interactive operation, HELP system and new procedures. It
also describes the use of Clustan/PC, the first version for personal
computers. I hope Clustan users will find it to be a substantial improvement
on the previous manual.
