Description of Photograph The picture is of a 40 column ICT punch card. These cards were used in a Builders Merchants in the 50/60's on either an ICT or Powers-Samas accounting machine.
Powers-Samas was a British company which sold punched card equipment.
The company was in competition with the British Tabulating Machine Company (BTM), with which it eventually merged in 1959 to form International Computers and Tabulators (ICT).
Powers-Samas was also known as "Acc and Tab" (Accounting and Tabulating).
This was kindly donated by Mrs Weedon of Haverhill who was using these cards and is standing on the left of the group in front of the punch card unit.
Does any one know whether the machine was a Powers-Samas or ICT machine?
In answer to the question above, Bartbara Savage has kindly emailed us with the following comment:
"I worked on both Powers Samas and Hollerith machines in the 1950's and 60's in the steel inductry in Sheffield, and in answer to your question about the machine pictured I would say it is not a Powers Samas as in my experience they were always a battle-ship grey colour and the Hollerith - or ICT machines were always this buff colour."
