Join our small but mighty learning team

We are looking for people with a bright and outgoing personality to join our small but mighty learning team.

Learning Coach (Casual, Part Time)

Job Title: Learning Coach
Hours: variable
Salary: £14 per hour
Responsible to: Head of Learning
Location: Cambridge

We are always looking for people to help with our Learning Programme, so there is no deadline for this role.

The Centre for Computing History (CCH) is a friendly and accessible museum with a strong focus on learning. Our core purpose is to use our collections, displays, learning programmes, and events to explore the social, cultural and historical impact – the lived experience - of developments in computing from the past 80 years. Through hands-on and inclusive experiences, we explore how these powerful devices became an inextricable part of all our lives and changed our world.

The staff team at CCH consists of 6.8 full-time equivalent employees, most working part-time hours, supported by nearly 50 volunteers.  In term-time, schools, colleges and university groups visit the museum for fast-paced, engaging learning sessions (mainly on Wednesdays, Thursdays and-Fridays) and we need a pool of casual staff and volunteers who can be flexible with their time to work with our existing team to deliver pre-planned content to the young people who visit us.

Our educational visits cater to students from primary, secondary and higher education levels and feedback on the visits is excellent from both school staff and young people. Demand for visits fluctuates throughout the year, but the museum attracts between 1 and 3 school visits most weeks in term-time. Most visits take place between 9:30am and 2:30pm.

We are particularly looking for people who have previous experience of working with children of all ages and can deliver activities in an inclusive, fun and engaging way. This experience does not need to be formal teaching experience; an enthusiasm that sparks curiosity and a willingness to be supportive and encouraging with young people is as important as anything else. We offer full training but an interest in computing would be an advantage.

You could be involved in our varied programming workshops, talks and demos, and/or guided tours. You can read more about what we do during our educational visits on the learning pages of our website. We also offer workshops, demos and tours to the public in school holidays, so additional hours may be possible then too.

Schools book their visit well in advance most of the time and we would inform you of bookings as they are made so you can arrange your calendar.

Pay will be at the rate of £14 per hour, paid monthly.

If this seems like an interesting opportunity to you, please get in touch. For an informal chat please contact Anjali Das or Lisa McGerty on 01223 214446 or email education@computinghistory.org.uk.

To apply, please send a CV and a covering statement (of no more than 500 words), detailing any relevant experience and knowledge, and what interests you about this role to Anjali Das, The Centre for Computing History, Rene Court, Cambridge CB1 3EW or via email to anjali@computinghistory.org.uk. Please indicate your preferred working days/hours in your application.

We have an on-going need for learning services staff so there is no closing date for applications.

We are a disability, neurodiversity and mental health inclusive employer and want to ensure that you have a barrier-free recruitment experience. If you need adjustments during the recruitment process or require assistance completing an application as the result of disability, please email education@computinghistory.org.uk.

Research shows some people, especially women and marginalised groups, may hesitate to apply unless they match all the criteria. However, we encourage applications from all individuals, if you feel you have something to offer the museum and the young people who visit. Your unique perspective matters to us – please apply with confidence.

The successful candidate may be subject to an enhanced disclosure from the Disclosure & Barring Service and appropriate references.
