Controlling Reactions

Chemical reactions can take place in time periods ranging from the few fractions of a second required for an atom to form a chemical bond, to geological time scales of millions of years for the formation of rocks. Reaction rates depend on how often the reaction atoms and molecules encounter one another, the temperature, and on the properties (including shape) of the reacting species. This CD-ROM examines the ways in which the speed of chemical reactions can be controlled and the importance of human activity.
