Atari releases the 7800 console

The Atari 7800 is a video game console released by Atari.

The console was originally announced on 21st May 1984, but was not released until two years later due to the sale of Atari to Jack Tramiel, the founder of Commodore.

The Atari 7800 was almost fully backward-compatible with the Atari 2600 and it was considered affordable at a price of US$140.

The machine had much improved graphics capabilities over its predecessors, but used the same soundchip as the Atari 2600.
