Atari launches the VCS/2600 console

The Atari VCS is a video game console released by Atari.

From its launch in 1977 to November 1982, the console was branded as the Atari Video Computer System (Atari VCS). In November 1982 the console was renamed as the Atari 2600.

The Atari VCS is credited with popularizing the use of microprocessor-based hardware with separate cartridges containing the game code, instead of having non-microprocessor dedicated hardware with all games built in.
