It was originally produced by Midway in 1993 as an arcade fighting game. It was ported to multiple home systems; MS-DOS, Amiga, Game Boy, Game Gear, Sega Genesis/Megadrive, 32K, Sega Saturn, Super Nintendo Entertainment System and PlayStation. It was the sequel to the 1992 Mortal Kombat and it contains several iconic characters and their classic villain. It contained unprecedented commercial success and was acclaimed by most critics, receiving many annual awards. Featured in many top-lists, also causing major video game controversy. It also spawned the spin-off game Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks and the sequel: Mortal Kombat 3 in 1995.
