I graduated from The University College of Wales Aberystwyth in 1967 and joined Kodak’s Computer Management initial training course of 12 weeks.  Half the time was spent learning to program in PL/1 from memory on an IBM360/50.  My first assignment was Box Costs a series of 3 programmes that calculated the cost of the boxes film and paper were put into.  Each program had to fit into 84K.  After that I worked on the Kodak payroll system in approx. 1969.  At that time Kodak had about 20k employees and the payroll was run on the Leo system it was very customised and had many different allowances and bonus calculations.  The decision was made to move it in house and use the Peterborough Data Processing system Unipay which again had to be seriously customised.  

I visited the Lyons site in Hammersmith during the development of the new system.  It took about 12 to 18 months to move the system across and was still being used when they made me redundant in 1988. There was only 1 week in which the Unipay system was paid a day late, which caused furore from the unions, despite there being agreement that a day late every x years would be acceptable.
