The player takes the part of the Emperor of the Roman Empire during the first few centuries A.D.

The player determines the difficulty by choosing the century (first, third, or fourth) which correspond with beginner, medium, and expert. Each game covers an eight year period, with two moves per year. The game ends once the emperor is deposed, killed, or the eight years elapse.
