Thomas de Colmar launches the Arithmometer
1851 The Arithmometer was the first commercially successful mechanical calculator, patented by Thomas de Colmar in 1820. Its design made the Arithmometer the first calculating machine reliable enough to be used in the office environment. The first production model was launched in 1851, and production continued until around 1914. Around 5,000 machines were produced in this time period, and the devices were sold all over the world.
