Zelda II is the follow-up to the smash hit The Legend of Zelda. This too came on a gold-coloured cartridge in the West and saw players tasked with rescuing Princess Zelda. The Japanese version, like the original, came on a disk for use in the Famicom Disk System. In addition to the top-down view used exclusively in the first Zelda game, Zelda II featured 2D platforming and exploration sections viewed side-on. This game also relies more heavily on RPG tropes such as levelling up by acquiring experience points and interacting with non-playable characters. Once again Zelda spawned imitators, this time employing the 2D aspects in role-playing games.
