EDOS, or Electronical Distribution of Software was a software distribution initiative run by Software on Demand of Staffordshire. Not to be confused with IBM's EDOS: Extended/Enhanced Disk Operating System.

Copies of software and games were re-produced on an EDOS machine (a customised PC) in game shops and some larger retailers. This meant retailers could offer a huge range of games without taking up too much shelf space. The customer would select the game from a catalogue, and it would then be copied from a master CD onto a floppy disk or cassette tape while they waited. This was a completely legal method, and manufacturers received full royalties. The EDOS titles cost £2.99-£7.99.

The manual would then be printed, and then put into a jewel case with the medium of choice. Some labels had boxes for the store person to tick for the correct format.

EDOS disappeared from shops after John Menzies withdrew support in 1994, and most independent shops found the system far too expensive to run.
