Nintendo releases the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)
27th September 1986 First released in Japan in 1983 as the Famicom, Nintendo redesigned the machine to become the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) for the US and other markets. After successful test releases in selected US cities starting with New York on 18th October 1985, and Los Angeles in February 1986, Nintendo finally released the NES nationwide on 27th September 1986. Taken together, the Famicom and NES were the best selling gaming console of its time. By March 2014, Nintendo reported sales of 61.91 million units worldwide alongside 500 million software units.
