62296 General view of LEO I (c1954)

Description of Photograph

Digital copy of a photograph of a general view of LEO I, now operational, from across the peripherals area.

This image appears in the interactive plan for our Virtual LEO I installation, p4.

Related material: Probably taken on the same day as CMLEO/PB/PH/1/61308 - appears to be the same view without the two operators.

Research comments: Believed to date from c.1954, this photograph shows the completed LEO I computer. In the foreground are the various pieces of peripheral equipment (tabulators, punched card readers etc). The operators' console sits in the centre of the peripherals area. In the background on the left is the power distribution panel and on the right are the valve racks suspended above a false wooden floor which houses the mercury delay line storage tubes. A blackboard is mounted on the central pillar. (LM)

Provenance
Scan of original glass lantern slide from the collections of the Computer Science Department at the University of Manchester (former ref. 'page24a'). Donated by Prof Jim Miles.
