Description of Photograph

Digital copy of a photograph of the British Tabulating Machines Hollerith Tabulator which was installed on LEO I.

Caption: 'Hollerith special tabulators printing @ 100 lines/minute on 100 columns all having 0-11 on every column.  [ms] Nov 1953'.

 

Research comments: In his book, LEO: The First Business Computer, Peter Bird notes that the Hollerith tabulators supplied by BTM were special in that they were designed "to print the figures 10 and 11 together as one character, to handle the peculiar UK requirement of 10d and 11d sterling notation of that time" (pp68).
