61192 LEO I - Rack no 21 (1954)

Description of Photograph

Photograph of the 21st LEO I rack, fully populated and in position.

This image appears in the interactive plan for our Virtual LEO I installation, p84.

Research comments: Rack number 21 was the last rack to be added to LEO I. The coat hooks behind the rack are a reminder that this was a room inhabited by people as well as an enormous calculator. Before long, mainframe computers start to be installed in sterile air conditioned rooms in companies around the country, but LEO I's environment couldn't be more different to that. LEO was built in a room that used to house Lyons' ice cream sales office and was essentially a workshop, until it was given a makeover after the machine was complete. (LM)
