The BCS, or British Computer Society, is founded

In 1957, the British Computer Society (BCS) is formed when the London Computer Group merges with an association of scientists.

On 14th October 1957, the BCS is formally incorporated as The British Computer Society Ltd.

Since 1984 BCS has operated under a Royal Charter which requires it to: "promote the study and practice of Computing and to advance knowledge therein for the benefit of the public".

Since 2009, the society has been known as "BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT".
