Photograph of a flowchart or schematic showing the main constituent elements of LEO I and their interactions, taken from 'The Layman's Guide to LEO' (1952). Peter Bird notes in his caption that the terminology was still in its early stages.

Published in Bird, Peter  LEO - The First Business Computer  (Wokingham: Hasler, 1994), Fig 3.4, p74.

Research comments: As Peter Bird noted the terminology used in this schematic is interesting. The 'chargers' are the input channels (punched cards etc), which they also referred to sometimes as 'inlets' (see for example draft chapters of the Layman's Guide to LEO). The 'recorders' are the outputs (teleprinter or magnetic tape), sometimes referred to as 'outlets'. The use of the word 'organ' in the title anthropomorphises the machine somewhat too. (LM)
