This was a handheld console, released in 1999 by Bandai, and designed by Gunpei Yokoi, who formerly worked for Nintendo. It was a monochrome console with amazing battery life and good software support. Unfortunately Yokoi would not see his console hit market, as he died before it launched. One of the launch titles was Gunpey, a puzzle game named after him. The WonderSwan Color was released a year later, and was backward-compatible with the original WonderSwan but incorporated a colour screen, which was not immune to copious amounts of blur. The Swan Crystal, which was the final model, has a much improved screen and is the most sought after. Never released outside of Japan, the machine shipped around a million units, and has many interesting limited edition machines, such as Final Fantasy and Gunpey.
