Sega releases the Saturn console

22nd November 1994 The Sega Saturn is a 32-bit game console developed by Sega. The Saturn was based around two Hitachi SH2 32-bit processors operating at 28.6MHz. It had a double-speed CD-ROM drive, and two video display processors capable of producing 704×224 resolution output with up to 16.78 million colors. Sega released the Saturn in Japan on 22nd November 1990, then North America on 11th May 1995, and Europe on 8th July 1995. The US and Europe release dates were unusual, in that they were in the middle of summer. Sega had brought forward the release of the console to try and gain an advantage over the Sony PlayStation. The Sega Saturn was considered expensive at £399.99, considering the console did not come with a game and only one joypad. Launch games included Virtua Fighter, Daytona USA, and International Victory Goal. At first, the Saturn outsold PlayStation in Japan. However, after the US and European launch of Sony's machine, the Saturn fell well behind in sales by the end of 1995. Related information:
