IBM 3987 Printer

IBM 3987 Printer

Golf ball style printer.

We have received the following information on this machine from Mr Mike Eade.

"The 3982 I remember was widely used in the 70s as a golf ball printer for a branch office banking system. Lloyd’s were a key user. The 9 in the number denotes that it was a custom or special (RPQ or request price quotation)at that time. It was a little unusual as I remember in that it was connected via modem link to a remote controller. There was a keyboard but this also talked to the remote controller, with the keystrokes returned to the 3982 via the modem link."
"Thinking further although it had the 3 prefix which generally defined 70s tech, the controller and system were actually 60s tech (core memory loaded by a paper tape reader.. )."

It has two stickers, one on the rear left says 3982 interface pre*production, while the second has Microelectronics Research Ltd.

The stickered module has been attached to the printer with screws, and seems to be to connect the printer to a modem.
