Linus Torvalds releases Linux

17th September 1991 Linux is a free, UNIX-like operating system, developed by Linus Torvalds. It is an open source project with source code distributed for free. On 25th August 1991 Linus Torvalds first publicly announced his Linux project with a post to the “comp.os.minix” user group asking for feedback. Linus Torvalds made the first Linux kernel release, 0.01, on September 17 to a group of friends. This release was never publicly announced. This was followed by a public release of the Linux kernel, 0.02, on October 5. In a post to the Linux-Kernel mailing list on 17th September 2021, Torvalds acknowledged this date as the "true 30th anniversary date of the actual code". Related information:
