51855 Build Room, WX Block, Cadby Hall

Description of Photograph

Photograph of the LEO I build room at Cadby Hall.

Inscription on reverse: 'shows part of a room on second floor of WX block, Cadby Hall, where LEO I was built. On left first 2 racks made by Lyons Engineering W/S with units made by Wayne Kerr Labs.'

This image appears in the interactive plan for our Virtual LEO I installation , p20.

Research comments: This early photograph shows the Cadby Hall 'calculator room' (as it was referred to by Lyons at the time) very much as a workshop. The construction of the computer was firmly an engineering project, with almost every component built from scratch and then meticulously tested. The first valve racks on the left are still being assembled and cables hang haphazardly from the ceiling. (LM)
