A turn based Japanese Role Playing Game (JRPG) following the journey of Justin and his friend Sue as they traverse the world after discovering an ancient artefact, being joined by various other characters on the way who drop in and out of the party. Brought to EU by publishers Ubi Soft and the US by Sony Computer Entertainment for the original Playstation, but was released in Japan for both the Playstation (PS) and the SEGA Saturn (SS).
Important conversations during the adventure are fully voice acted in English, giving the main cast and the plot some extra help immersing the player in the world. Characters were 2-Dimensional sprites whilst the environments were fully modelled in 3-Dimensions, showing the power of the consoles (PS and SS respectively).
In terms of gameplay, players are free to explore the 3D world in segments and travel to different areas via a cursor. Once in an area, enemies can approach the player in order to initiate a turn-based battle which the characters movement and attacks affect where they are on the battlefield, for example, enemies and allies alike can miss if their attacks are issued whilst the opposition is moving to attack another enemy/ally.
During brief respites in the games many INNs, players are given the option to flesh out the character and plot development by seeing what party members have to say about their current situations whilst sat around the dinner table.
With the adventure spanning two the Playstation discs, Grandia will give players a guaranteed 40 hours of entertainment at the very least to play the game to the very end.
