The RM Nimbus PC286 was part of the M Series of Nimbus computers, which consisted of both 286 - 12Mhz and 386 - 16/20/25Mhz machines. They were based on the MCA bus as used by IBM PS/2 machines. This machine has 1 Mbyte of RAM, and is fitted with a MCA Ethernet card which allows it to run on our RM NET Network. It also has an internal 30Mbyte HDD so it can be used as a standalone machine. The HDD in this model is connected via a western digital MCA ESDI controller. The motherboard contains the FDD controller and it is fitted with a 1.44Mbyte FDD. It has VGA graphics built onto its motherboard. It also has a Hitachi CD-ROM controller card fitted and will connect to upto 4 Hitachi CDROM drives. It is configured to run optinet as part of the RM NET 3.1 CDROM Server Extension package, which allows it to serve out CDROM disks to other stations on an RM NET 3.1 network. RM released support disks for a number of CDROM titles including Information Finder by World Books. This is the disk that is used as standard on our network.
