Codename MAT launches you into the incredible world of 3D arcade strategy. You will need the reflexes of a fighter pilot, the wisdom of a master-tactician - and the ability the be both at once. An epic of space conflict which puts you right in the cockpit of the battle-cruiser Centurion. The game was written by Derek Brewster, who also wrote the adventure game section in Crash magazine. There were accusations in the rival magazines, that Crash's high score for the game was influenced by his links to the magazine. Anyone who has played the game though, will know it is a great space title. Taking control of a battle cruiser, the player flies through the cosmos, taking a first person view, destroying enemy craft, and using the map to fly to different squares, each containing white dots for the amount of enemies to clear. Mat must empty all the squares of enemies and save the planets from invasion or destruction. The ship has forward and rear views like Elite, does not use radar, but co ordinates to find the enemy ships, a shield can be turned on and off, and docking can be performed at the planets, refuelling the ship and repairing damage. Hyperspace is used to fly long distances, and the player must keep the target inside the cursor, stray too far outside and the ship is destroyed.
