Call of Duty is a 2003 first-person shooter video game developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. It is the first major installment in the Call of Duty video game series. The game simulates the infantry and combined arms warfare of World War II. Call of Duty received critical acclaim from many video game publications. It won several "Game of the Year" awards for 2003 from several reviewers. Review website IGN rated the game 9.3/10, with reviewer Dan Adams saying "You have to love a game that glues you to your seat and keeps you interested... A thrilling piece of software that action fans should grab a hold of and love fiercely." His only negative critique was on the short length of the game, which many reviewers pointed out. As of November 2013 the game had sold 4.5 million copies. The Call of Duty series has gone on to become arguably the most recognisable gaming franchise in the world, with near-annual entries in the franchise combining to sell over 175 million total copies as of April 2015.
