This mechanical slide rule is similar in appearance to a large pocket watch. From the manual: "The Calculating Circle is an instrument by means of which one can solve all arithmetical operations and consequently all numerical formulae no matter what sciences to which they belong. These operations are not only performed with extraordinary facility and rapidity, but with an approximation to accuracy sufficient for all practical purposes." The manual has a full explanation of how to use the Calculating Circle; at the end is a handwritten purchase order showing the device was sold for ten shillings on 25th November 1902.
