Agent X

A note worthy game for a few reasons, this is effectively a series of mini games rolled into one, you play the eponymous hero, who must drive, fight, and shoot in a third person way towards an evil scientist, who has kidnapped the president, in a plot that could come straight from a James Bond Movie. The game is one of the most famous budget titles Mastertronic produced, rather unusual in that it is a multi load, and has a tune from Mike Follin at the start that should be impossible on the 48K Spectrum, rather buzzy by today's standards, it manages to get a multi channel tune out of the system. The first level is an isometric driving game, avoiding pits in the road, and other vehicles, once the evil scientist's base has been reached the next level loads, and is a simple side scrolling fighting level, the third is a third person level, where objects that are hurled towards the screen in the scientist lab must be shot, and the final level sees our agent flying a helicopter in a side on scrolling shooting game, he has to fly to collect a bomb, then fly it back to the scientist's lair and blow it up. The game has one of the most amusing energy bars ever created, as Agent X takes damage, his likeness at the bottom of the screen walks towards a gravestone, when he reaches it, it is game over. The game could be completed with practice under ten minutes, but its mix of styles, and tongue in cheek humour have made it a firm favourite among gamers of this era.
