An adding machine working to base 8 (octal). The octal system uses eight digits, 0 to 7. Throughout history, a number of civilisations have used base 8 numbering systems. It later became more widely used with the advent of early electronic computing. Handheld calculating machines such as the Octadat were used by computer operators and programmers to calculate the octal numbers.
