After the amazing success of GoldenEye, Rare had to do something special for their follow up FPS. The result was Perfect Dark, a dark futuristic sci-fi first-person shooter that drew inspiration from Blade Runner, The X-Files, and popular conspiracy theories. Players take control of Joanna Dark, a secret agent working for the Carrington Institute, as she is tasked with rescuing a defecting AI. From here the story travels to many locations that make up the objective-filled missions. An N64 Expansion Pak is mandatory for the single player experience, but some multiplayer modes are available for non-expanded N64s. There was a companion game on the Game Boy Color and a disappointing prequel later released on the XBOX 360.
