The game is one of the more violent titles of the 8 bit era, with the hero fighting his way through various levels in the more dangerous parts of town on his way to freeing his girlfriend from the local crime lord.

He has various kicks and punches in his arsenal, including an especially painful knee to the groin plus climbing on a prone victim to punch them when they are on the ground, and in an early example of the side scrolling fighting genre, the game allows the player to pick up weapons knocked away from the bad guys for use against them, these include hammers, clubs and various other objects.

One of the more controversial levels pits your character against a gang of women, who are ferocious enough, but are guarded by what is presumed to be a pimp with a hand gun, he appears shoots and retreats, once he has fired six times, he can be taken on and beaten, the trick here is to position one of his girls in the line of fire to thin the numbers.

Sub bosses appear at the end of every other level, before the climatic fight against Mr Big for the finale, and he does not fight fair.

The game is the sequel to the arcade conversion Renegade, and is an original Ocean title, considered one. if not the best brawler on the Spectrum.

A third game Renegade III would also be released, but compared to the first two games was an infamous disappointment, scoring suspiciously highly in magazines of the day, but leaving game players cold with it's dull gameplay and impossible time limits.
