This unit has been designed for use by students in the later years of their secondary education (16 to 18). The aim is to reinforce students' knowledge of some properties of the elements and their compounds, and of trends within the periodic table. This is achieved through the reasoning needed to identify an element using the minimum of information. This information is obtained from the computer. Each piece of information has a 'cost' reflecting how useful it is in identifying the element. The student's aim is to minimise the total cost.
