Often quoted as one of the best licensed games of the '80s, and one of the largest selling. The Spectrum version alone spent nearly a year on top of the charts.
One reason for its success was the entertaining mixture of styles. There were side-on arcade sections, puzzle elements (such as the identifit screen) and for good measure a couple of first-person perspective levels, where the player had to rescue a hostage by shooting the captor.
Instead of just being a rather lazy platform shooter like most of its contemporaries, the game actually followed the main plot of the film to a fair degree. Perhaps the secret of Robocop's great success was that younger players could be transported to the world of the film, when they might not have been allowed to watch the real thing, which was of course incredibly gory and 18 rated!
