Raspberry Pi Foundation launches the Raspberry Pi Zero

The Raspberry Pi Zero launches as a $5 USD single board computer. It has a 1GHz processor, 512Mb memory, a mini-HDMI port and two Micro USB ports in a 65mm x 30mm x 5mm package.

It can run a full Linux operating system, including applications like Scratch and Minecraft. The low power hardware allowed a new wave of battery-powered projects, such as robotics and IoT devices.

The Raspberry Pi Zero drove down the cost of entry to computing, allowing hobbyists to experiment with low-cost hardware. It was so cheap that they were included with copies of MagPi magazine.
